Immigration Policy In Election 2008 Promises

The Liberals are promising to invest $800 million to clear the immigration backlog, bring more immigrants to Canada . Liberal Leader Stephane Dion says that if elected his government would scrap recent changes to Canada's immigration system -- changes that his party abstained from defeating this spring. Speaking to a luncheon crowd of predominantly Chinese Canadians, Mr. Dion made a slate of promises ranging from visa reform to foreign credential recognition.

The Liberal leader promised to clear the current backlog of 900,000 immigrants waiting to come to this country, bring in a new business and visitors’ visa system and introduce a series of programs to help new Canadians learn one of the country’s official languages and have their professional credentials recognized here. A program to teach newly arrived immigrants one or both official languages would be set up at a cost of $200 million. It was the second day in a row the Liberals have targeted campaign messages to immigrant voters in Western Canada.
